Imlil is roughly 60–70 km from Marrakech, and the drive usually takes about 1.5 hours each way in normal conditions. Most of the route is on paved mountain roads, with the last section climbing gradually into the valley, so you get changing views rather than a long highway slog.

You should be comfortable walking for 2–4 hours a day on uneven paths while carrying a small daypack. The route is classed as “easy to moderate”: it involves some uphill and downhill but no technical scrambling, no ropes and no exposure to serious drop-offs, so most reasonably active travellers manage it well.

Most travellers do not experience serious altitude problems on this tour, because you sleep around 1,740 m in Imlil and walk slightly higher towards Aremd and Sidi Chamharouch—well below the elevations where acute altitude sickness becomes common. You may notice slightly heavier breathing on climbs, but if you stay hydrated, walk at a steady pace and tell your guide if you feel unwell, it is usually very manageable.

Plan for layers: a breathable T-shirt, light fleece or jumper, and a windproof/waterproof jacket, as temperatures can change quickly between Marrakech and the High Atlas. Add comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a small daypack for water and personal items; in cooler months, bring gloves and a warm hat, as evenings and mornings can be cold even when Marrakech feels mild.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the best balance of pleasant daytime temperatures, clear views and comfortable walking conditions in the High Atlas. Winter can be beautiful with snow on the peaks but brings colder nights and occasional snow or ice on higher paths; summer is hot in Marrakech but noticeably cooler in Imlil thanks to the altitude, so morning and late-afternoon walks still work well.

Most established routes and villages around Imlil and Asni have reopened to visitors, with guesthouses and trekking companies reinforcing or repairing their buildings and infrastructure. High-end properties in the region, like Kasbah Tamadot near Asni, have fully restored operations, which reflects broader recovery in the area; responsible operators also continually assess local conditions and adjust itineraries if any zone is not yet suitable.

Most guesthouses in Imlil serve traditional Moroccan dishes such as soups, salads, tajines and couscous, often using local vegetables and seasonal produce.
